Be a student, turn off the TV and laptop and grab a book

There is no finish line – Nike

You’re a beginner once, you should be a student for life – Paul Markel

Training is Survival – Matt Canovi

Be Prepared – the Boy Scout Motto

While I am not a big fan of quippy phrases to live my life by, these above have some wisdom in just a few words.

Zig Zeigler spent 3 hours a day studying, he was a lifelong student. Jack Welch sets aside 2 hours every day, 7 days a week to read, he is a lifelong student.

Coming home after working all day and plopping down on the couch for a few hours of TV, Xbox and Facebook will never help you. It won’t improve your physical or mental health. It will not create closer relationships.

Reading a book with purpose will improve your life, I am not talking about romance novels or fiction that has no moral or lessons. Yes, they can provide a break, but just like TV, they really don’t improve your life.

Out brain is a muscle and like all muscles it must be worked otherwise it will lose “strength” or in this case the capacity to think.

When we are at rest, we are actively dying. Our brains are losing capacity, our muscles are degenerating while we are eating cheese puffs watching Xena.

I am all for physical recovery, I do believe in reading a fiction book and watching a TV, I am against binge watching and other “leisure’s” that make one soft. Doing these things causes you pain (through brain and muscle atrophy) which makes you less energetic as the days turn to months and months to years.

By exercising your brain and body, you will live longer and happier (less aches and pains due to degeneration).

This week read 15 minutes a night, sign up for a class at the local YMCA, meet with a (non-grumpy) friend and have a glass of lemonade and engage in stimulating conversation, or go for a walk.

Whatever you do, do something.

I’m not a good self-help guru, however I did write a short series of articles on improving yourself. You can check out part 1 here http://the22man.com/2016/01/we-all-need-to-improve-and-grow-to-live-part-1-books/

Don’t let others scare you into inactivity due to a fake pandemic. Don’t let those that are mentally and physically softer than you talk you down to their level. Get up, move your body and brain.

Until we meet again, keep your booger hook off the bang switch until on target and ready to fire.
